Five areas where Covid cases are still rising as PM vows ‘caution’ in easing lockdown

Just five areas in England have seen week-on-week rises in Covid cases, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would be «cautious» in bringing the country out of lockdown.

Of the country’s 315 local authority areas, 310 have seen sharp falls, including the worst-affected hotspots.

Although Knowsley in Merseyside remains the area with the highest new infection rate, it dropped sharply in the seven days to Saturday.

Corby in Northamptonshire has the second highest rate, followed by Sandwell in the West Midlands – but each have seen substantial falls in new cases.

East Lindsey, Torbay, Rutland, Hartlepool and North Kesteven are the only areas which have recorded slight rises in cases.

Latest figures reveal Knowsley has the highest infection rate in England – but it is falling steeply

Five areas recording week-on-week rise in rates:

  • East Lindsey (up from 98.1 cases per 100,000 people to 130.5)
  • Torbay (160.0 to 182.7)
  • Rutland (180.3 to 200.4)
  • Hartlepool (313.9 to 329.9)
  • North Kesteven (181.3 to 186.5)

Today chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty said he believed the UK is past the peak of the current wave – but urged against complacency.

A further 1,322 deaths were confirmed today, and Prof Whitty warned that the daily figure would remain high «for some time».

But there is cause for optimism with a 25 per cent drop in new cases in the past seven days compared to the week before.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would make an announcement on February 22 explaining his plan for leaving lockdown.

Resisting calls to reopen schools before the planned date of March 8, he said: “What we don’t want to do is to be forced into reverse so this is the prudent and cautious approach.»

Prof Whitty said the UK is now past the peak of the current wave and on a “downward slope” of coronavirus cases, hospitalisations and deaths.

“I think that most of my colleagues think we are past the peak,” he told a Downing Street briefing.

“Now that doesn’t mean you could never have another peak. But, at this point in time, provided people continue to follow the guidelines, we’re on the downward slope of cases, of hospitalisations and of deaths, in all four of the nations of the United Kingdom.

“So I think, we do think, at this point, this peak at least, we are past.”
